Yakisugi…what is it?

Yakisugi or Shou Sugi ban as it’s also known is a Japanese method of wood treatment which essentially chars the outer surface of the wood.

Whilst this may at first sound a little crazy, it’s actually really beneficial…and looks awesome…

There’s many ways to carry this out, some use a blow torch as seen in the picture, whilst others go a little more traditional and create a chimney like structure from the planks of wood and start a small fire in the middle (this one’s a bit more budget friendly also).

When do you know it’s done? I wish there was a hard fast rule around this but truthfully there’s not, if it’s just aesthetics you’re after then char to your desired effect, whereas if it’s treatment you’re after you want the burn to go a bit deeper, giving the wood an alligator skin effect.

As the wood is cleaned after the treatment, the concerns around the char marking everything it touches are lifted! Taker a look at some of our products to get an idea of what can be achieved using Yakisugi!
